When Jack Herer died on April 15, 2010, the world lost a true American Original. He was one of those larger-than-life kind of guys. When he walked into a room he owned it. You couldn't take your eyes off him. And you couldn't ignore him either ... he wouldn't allow it.
Jack's entire being was defined by his cause, and his pledge to fight every day until cannabis was legal, until he was dead, or until he turned 84. Jack took that pledge seriously and never stopped fighting, literally giving his last breath for the cause.
We decided to honor our friend Jack with a Memorial Tribute Edition of our "Emperor of Hemp" DVD. We went back through all of Jack's original interview footage and found a few never-before-seen gems, 20-plus bonus minutes of classic Jack at his fiery best. |

We were lucky enough to discover Kara's Flowers in 1999 ... before they changed their name to Maroon5 and became famous, winning Best New Artist at the 2005 Grammy Awards and toking up on the pages of High Times. "Emperor of Hemp" features two exclusive songs by the band and a third written by lead singer Adam Levine. Also on the soundtrack: songs by Bonnie Raitt, Joe Walsh, Cheap Trick, Kris Kristofferson, The Rascals, and others. |

Jack Herer 1939-2010 |
| |
Jack Herer, whose 1985 book "The Emperor Wears No Clothes" ignited the modern marijuana legalization movement, died April 15, 2010. In September 2009, Jack walked off stage after speaking at the Portland Hempstalk festival and collapsed, stricken by a heart attack that caused anoxic brain injury and left him with severe speech and physical impediments. His wife Jeannie was at his side when he died in Eugene, OR. |

Anita Roddick 1942-2007 |
|
In 1998, British businesswoman, human rights activist and environmentalist Anita Roddick entrusted a couple of Yanks with an outrageous amount of money to produce “Emperor of Hemp.” The outlay didn’t make a dent in her personal fortune, which was a good thing, because the documentary never returned a dime to her, but profit-making was not her goal. She was a true idealist.
Best known as the founder of the cosmetics company The Body Shop, she rocked the world by creating a line of hemp products in the late nineties. Turning herself into a hempster, she helped flip the plant’s outlaw image upside down, making it mainstream fashionable.
In 1990, Roddick founded Children On The Edge, a charitable organization which helps disadvantaged children in Eastern Europe and Asia.
In 2003, Queen Elizabeth II appointed Roddick a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire, but Dame Anita remained simply “Anita” to everyone. Our friend Anita died of a major acute brain hemorrhage on September 10, 2007.
